PHOENIX – Leslie Lepe, was named the 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award winner for Wayland Baptist University’s campus in Phoenix during an alumni family event held March 26.
Lepe earned her bachelor’s degree in management and her associate’s degree in business from Wayland in December 2020, balancing full-time work and family like many Phoenix students. As an employee of the City of Phoenix, Lepe has been an inspiration and encouragement to her work colleagues to continue their own educational journey at Wayland.
Her nominators noted, “When she would enter the classroom, her contagious smile and radiating joy created a positive classroom experience for students and faculty alike. We are incredibly proud of Leslie and have been honored to walk alongside her throughout her time at Wayland.”
Lepe is a management assistant in the public works solid waste field services division for the City of Phoenix, a position she has held since October 2020. She has worked in the city since 2004, serving in both public works and in engineering and architectural services. She earned the Public Works Employee Excellence in Action Award in 2005 and the Dedicated Achiever Award in 2015, then earned Public Works Outstanding Employee Award in 2016.
“What I love most about Wayland students around our system is that they are both great students as well as great employees and community servants. Leslie Lepe personifies all these characteristics and, like many of our adult students, really appreciated her experience to grow her knowledge base and improve herself with a Wayland education,” said Teresa Young, director of alumni relations at WBU. “We are so proud to be able to honor her in this way and to spotlight the great work our alumni do day in and day out for their communities.”
Wayland’s Alumni Association has presented Distinguished Alumni Awards to graduates over the homecoming weekend for many years. The program was expanded a few years ago to include a winner for each campus’ alumni, with Lepe among some of the last honored for 2021. When homecoming festivities were celebrated in February, a total of 16 alumni g selected and celebrated across the system.
