Growing Academically and Spiritually
Class of 2018
Ellen Hedlund, was an Elementary Education major from New Cuyama, Calif. She always knew that teaching was a career option for her.
“I was surrounded by amazing teachers from my mom’s excellent example to my first-grade through high school teachers,” Hedlund said. “When I started my time at Wayland, the first experience of observing in the local schools sparked that career path to become a goal.”
Hedlund has also served as a President’s Ambassador for three years, an education department student worker for four years, an RA for Davis Hall for three years and on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team for one semester. This past November she was also elected Miss Wayland 2018.
After graduating from Wayland, Hedlund hopes to stay in Texas and teacher her students their ABC’s and “the importance of being an American.”
On academic rigor…
“Academically, I have been challenged in a diverse amount of ways to gain the proper knowledge for my degree. Education classes allow for students to receive a great deal of hands-on-activity in the local school districts. This will allow students to really get a feel for being a teacher and seeking that career choice.”
On experiential learning…
“With Wayland being a small school in a small community, it is very easy to experience the hands-on features of one’s career choice. The community is supportive of Wayland and its values. Many local businesses and city officials are involved in helping the Wayland community grow and prosper.”
On Christian Education…
“A Christian faith-based education was a main reason I chose to attend Wayland. Knowing that I would be surrounded by staff and faculty who would support the Christian lifestyle was just what Wayland presented to me. There are countless organization that students can get involved in to continue to grow in Christ such as the Baptist Student Ministries, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, dorm Bible studies, and local churches that encourage one to grow spiritually.”
On being a President’s Ambassador…
“Being a President Ambassador is a very rewarding experience as I am able to meet and talk with those who donate finances, energy, and time to the school that has blessed me in achieving a higher education. Their stories inspire me to one day give back to a school that has done so much for me personally.”
