AMARILLO – The Wayland Baptist University Alumni Association presented the first Distinguished Alumni Award for 2020 on Friday, Jan. 25, to Michael Stumbo, director of the Pantex Protective Force, at its winter commencement ceremony.

Stumbo earned his Bachelor of Applied Science degree in management from Wayland’s Amarillo Campus in February 2014, graduating magna cum laude. He had previously earned his associate’s degree in justice administration in 2013 at WBU.

He has been a Pantex employee in the Safeguard Security Division for 32 years. Besides his work leadership, he has a passion for serving the less fortunate in his community. He attends Valleyview Church of the Nazarene, where he serves on the church board as finance chairman and is lead on the church security safety team.

Stumbo gives back to the Amarillo community by serving as a leadership giver and has volunteered multiple years as a loaned executive. Mike is also a member of a southern gospel quartet called Revelation, which sings regularly during the holiday season for seniors in many panhandle retirement and care facilities.

Mike and his wife of 23 years have five children and five grandchildren.

The Wayland Alumni Association presents Distinguished Alumni Awards to deserving individuals from each of its campuses throughout the calendar year, culminating at the homecoming weekend with the Alumnus of the Year Award selected from those 13 honorees.

“Wayland has a rich heritage of producing alumni who both excel in their chosen careers and who are giving back to their respective communities in amazing ways,” said Teresa Young, director of alumni relations at Wayland. “Mike Stumbo has been a leader in his work at Pantex and is certainly a community servant, so he’s an excellent choice to lead out the 2020 lineup of honorees.”
