Jimmy Dean Museum Hosts Birthday Party
July 23, 2018
PLAINVIEW, Texas – The Jimmy Dean Museum in Plainview will host a special 90th birthday party for the entertainment legend on Aug. 10. Festivities will begin at 4 p.m. with birthday cake and museum tours, and conclude with an outdoor concert at 8 p.m. Food truck vendors will be available prior to the concert.
There is no charge for the museum tours and concert. Food from the food trucks must be purchased on an individual basis.
The concert will feature Don Caldwell and the Caldwell Collective, known for their work at the Cactus Theater in Lubbock. The outdoor event will take place on the lawn in the center of the Wayland campus. Those attending are asked to bring their own lawn chair.
Although Dean passed away in 2010, his legend lives on. The story of his rise from poverty to entertainer and sausage mogul is chronicled in the Jimmy Dean Museum. The museum opened in 2016, funded by a donation from Dean’s widow, Donna Dean Stevens, and the Jimmy Dean Foundation. The museum features memorabilia from Dean’s personal collection, samples of his work as a singer, entertainer and sausage pitch man, and a documentary style film telling the Jimmy Dean story.
Dean was born on Aug. 10, 1928, in Olton, then moved with his family to Seth Ward on the outskirts of Plainview as a child. He was raised in Seth Ward where his mother scratched out a meager living cutting hair. The hardships of growing up in poverty fueled Dean’s passion and drive to succeed. In 2008, Jimmy and Donna Dean donated $1 million to Wayland, the largest individual cash gift ever given to the university.
The Birthday Bash will celebrate his life and is sponsored by Investment Center Plainview, Happy State Bank, Independent Insurance Agents of Plainview, Centennial Bank, High Plains Concrete, Chicken Express, Rocket Aviation, Morgan Eaves Real Estate, Germania Insurance, Chilton Heating and Air, Artisan Jewelry and United Supermarket.
