WBU Delivers Graduation Boxes to Students
Teresa Young, Alumni Director at Wayland Baptist University, surprised local students on Thursday and Friday, delivering more than 20 graduation boxes to those who would have participated in Saturday’s spring commencement ceremony.
WBU’s May commencement was canceled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wayland students were asked not to return following spring break and all class instruction moved to an online format. Students kept up with their coursework from a distance, and those who were on track to graduate in May will still have their graduation officially posted and receive their diplomas.
Students have been invited to participate in the December 2020 commencement service and many have expressed an interest in doing so. Some students do not have that option as they are already committed to jobs or graduate schools and they will not be available to return to campus in December.
The graduation box was a joint effort between several Wayland offices with the intent of recognizing graduates even though the university cannot officially share in their celebration.
“One of the things we really enjoy is being able to celebrate graduation where we can look them in the eye and congratulate them and welcome them to the alumni family,” Young said. “We didn’t get to do that this year. Our plan to invite them to the December graduation is perfect and I’m glad a lot of them are going to get to do that. But this is something we can do now to let them know we miss them and miss celebrating with them.”
Young, who was accompanied by Bradley Sell, owner of The Broadway Brew and president of the Wayland Alumni Council, and Pioneer Pete said their visits were all well received and they even surprised one graduate when his girlfriend told them he was at work at a local convenience store and they should visit him there.
The boxes are covered in a stylized confetti design. Inside graduates will find celebratory confetti poppers, balloons, a banner that says “I Did It” in big, bold letters, a link to a video graduation announcement from Wayland President Dr. Bobby Hall, a letter from Young, and a discount code for their next purchase at the University Store. Caps and gowns also in the box for those students who requested that it be shipped to them.
The Alumni Office will ship the remaining boxes to those students who do not live in Plainview.
