Wayland Employees Gather for Awards Recognition

Wayland faculty and staff awards were handed out recently, recognizing employees for their service to the university and community. Wayland Baptist University held its annual employee awards luncheon on April 6, recognizing employees for years of service and extraordinary contributions to their job and community.

Dr. Judy Jarrett was recognized as Wayland’s Piper Professor Award nominee. The Minnie Stephens Piper Award is given to a college professor in the state of Texas each year in recognition of academic, scientific, and scholarly achievements, as well as dedication to the profession. Colleges and universities throughout the state are encouraged to nominate a professor for the award each year. Jarrett is a professor of education and counseling at WBU-Lubbock.

The Association of Former Students handed out three awards. The Distinguished Faculty Service Award was presented to Dr. Ann Stutes, Dean of the School of Music. Stutes has worked at Wayland since 1998 and was promoted to Dean of the School of Music in 2008.

The Distinguished Staff Service Award was given to Karen LaQuey who has worked in several areas since joining the Wayland staff in 1996. LaQuey currently serves as director of the financial aid office, a position she has held since 2004.

Tricia Zuyus of WBU-Anchorage is the 2018 recipient of the Distinguished External Service Award. Zuyus is the receptionist for the valley location and processes all online applications as well as conducting other duties on campus.

The university staff awards were then handed out. The University Service Award, for exemplary service to the university, was given to Bertha Sistrunk, general accounting manager in the business office. The Community Service Award, given to an employee who exemplifies servant leadership within the community, went to Ron Appling, director of Wayland’s human resources office. The Campus/Student Involvement Award was presented to Lisa Kerbo, the administrative assistant in student activities, and the Excellence Award, for excellence on the job, was given to Trena Segovia, who works in the registrar’s office.

The university faculty awards were then presented. Dr. Clinton Lowin, Dean of the School of Religion and Philosophy received the University Service Award. Dr. J. Givens, professor of religion, received the Community Service Award. Dr. Stutes picked up her second award of the day when she was named the Scholarship Award recipient and Dr. Richard Fountain, associate professor of piano, was recognized with the Contribution to the Profession Award.

Dr. Wilburn Lackey, professor of psychology, was recognized for 40 years of service to Wayland, only to be outdone by his wife, Dr. Polly Lackey, director of libraries, who has been at Wayland for 45 years. Two employees, Kathy Burton, coordinator of accounts receivable, and Tom Ray, associate professor of history, were recognized by 35 years of service. Dr. Cindy McClenagan, vice president for academic affairs, received her 25-year certificate.
