Diaz Receives Hispanic Leadership Scholarship
May 1, 2019
PLAINVIEW – Sara Diaz had her heart set on attending a Baptist university, but didn’t think she would be able.
“I’ve always wanted go to a Baptist school,” said Diaz, who was looking at a different university. “It didn’t work out. I didn’t get enough money.”
As a senior in high school and future plans hanging in the balance, Diaz began making plans to attend her local community college in Midland when she heard about the Hispanic Leadership Scholarship offered by Wayland Baptist University. The daughter of Lazaro Diaz and Eva Rangel, both Wayland graduates, Diaz said her father got a call from friends who told him about the scholarship.
“I applied,” she said. “I didn’t think anything of it because, who am I to get that?”
Dean of the School of Religion and Philosophy Dr. Stephen Stookey said Diaz was one of many applicants, and when the vetting process was complete, she stood out as the obvious candidate.
The Hispanic Leadership Scholarship is for a student who is a member of a church affiliated with the Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas or the Texas Baptists. Students are required to complete an application, plan to attend Congreso, a Hispanic Baptist student conference, and plan to attend the annual meeting of the Hispanic Baptist Convention. A letter of recommendation from the student’s pastor is also required. Students, however, do not have to major in religion or Christian studies in order to qualify.
Diaz is planning to earn a degree in sociology and use it to help victims of human trafficking.
“Originally I was just going to study education because I didn’t know what to do,” Diaz said. “But it never really felt right.”
She then attended the Passion Conference in Georgia where she was introduced to the International Justice Mission.
“They talked about what they did, and they help people who are ‘the least of these,’” Diaz said. “I realized that’s what I want to do.”
Diaz will attend Wayland beginning in the fall of 2019.
Wayland is again taking applications for the Hispanic Leadership Scholarship. More information and an application can be found on the Wayland website, or email Donnie Brown, director of the Wayland Mission Center, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
