PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University dedicated the Dewey Rogers Endowed Scholarship Wednesday afternoon in memory of longtime West Texas businessman Dewey Donald Rogers, who died on Aug. 6, 2016. The Dewey Rogers Scholarship will benefit students pursuing careers in Christian ministry.

A lifelong Baptist, Rogers was born in Young County, Texas, in 1922. His family moved to Roosevelt County, N.M., in 1925 and returned a year later to live and farm in Brownfield. A 1940 graduate of Brownfield High School, Rogers briefly attended Texas Tech University before moving to San Diego, Calif., for a job. He joined the army in 1942 and served in an anti-aircraft unit in World War II where he saw action on Utah beach on D-Day. Following his discharge in 1945 or ’46, Rogers returned home to help his parents with a growing florist business in Brownfield.

Rogers returned to California in the 1950s where he met his wife, Ena Jo. In 1959, he once again moved back to Brownfield, taking over his parents’ florist business that he ran until he sold it in 1979. Rogers and his wife moved to Lubbock where he made a living buying and selling residential lots, as well as managing tenant farmland in several West Texas counties.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Lubbock and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and at the South Plains Food Bank.

Rogers had two children, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
