Wayland Opera Presents Hansel and Gretel

PLAINVIEW – The Wayland Baptist University School of Music will present the children’s opera Hansel and Gretel by Englebert Humperdinck at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 -18 in Harral Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.
Hansel and Gretel was originally written in 1893 in German, but it is often performed in English and is one of the more popular traditional operas with younger audiences. The opera is based on the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Students participating in opera and musical theatre will perform the show, and will be joined on stage by students from the local elementary schools.
Elizabeth Johnson, a senior from Carlsbad, N.M., will portray Gretel. Hansel will be portrayed by Erin Pearce, a sophomore from Clovis, N.M. Lillie Cooper, a senior from Lubbock, will fill the role of the witch. Josh Walters, a senior from Lubbock, and Madison Younger, a junior from Canyon, will play the mother and father. Sara Stevens, a junior from Fort Worth, and Claire Daily, a freshman from Plainview, will play the fairies.
The opera is directed by Dr. Brian Kuhnert, associate professor of vocal studies.
