PLAINVIEW -- Wayland’s Director of Alumni Development Danny Andrews is retiring at the end of December. Andrews came to Wayland in 2006 after 39 years at the Plainview Daily Herald. Andrews took over for Joe Provence who had served as the alumni director since 1985
Andrews has a near 50-year relationship with Wayland, enrolling as a student in the fall of 1967 and graduated with a degree in history in 1972. He began work at the Herald in 1967 and was promoted to sports editor in 1970 and was named editor in 1978.

While at Wayland, Andrews has overseen homecoming festivities, been highly involved in various campus committees, worked diligently with Wayland’s athletics programs, and raised money for the university. He was instrumental in securing the first $1 million gift from Jimmy and Donna Dean, the largest cash donation in Wayland’s history.

Aside from his daily activities, Andrews has been a regular at sporting events, providing play-by-play for radio and internet broadcasts for football, baseball and basketball games. He has represented Wayland at various state-wide conferences and been instrumental in bringing events to campus such as Ernie Haase and Signature Sound concerts.

He authored a book, “Things I Have Saw and Did,” that chronicled the many stories he has collected throughout his time as a newspaper man and alumni director. Proceeds from the sale of his book benefitted Wayland scholarships.

The recipient of many awards and recognition throughout his career, Andrews was named Wayland’s Distinguished Service Alumni Award winner in 1992 and was inducted into the Wayland Athletic Hall of Honor in 2006. His wife, Carolyn, retired earlier this year after serving 15 years in the President’s Office. They have three children, Brandon, Kayla and Brad. Danny and Carolyn plan to move to Burleson in the future to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
