Abraham Art Gallery hosts American Watercolor Society exhibit

PLAINVIEW – The Abraham Art Gallery and Malouf Abraham Family Art Center will host the 149th annual awards exhibition of the American Watercolor Society July 15-Sept. 18.

Dr. Candace Keller, curator of art for the Abraham Art Gallery said this year’s exhibit is a fantastic show featuring 40 paintings selected from more than 1,200 artist submission from around the world. These paintings are featured in a traveling show each year.

“Wayland’s Abraham Art Gallery is one of only five national venues honored to host this beautiful exhibit, and we have a great many patrons and watercolor artists who travel to Plainview just to see this show,” Keller said.

While inclusion in the show is itself an honor, artists also competed for the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals of Honor, and 32 other awards and medals with nearly $50,000 awarded in prize money. The artworks feature a wide range of subjects, style and a great variety of techniques and use of the watercolor media.

The American Watercolor Society is one of the oldest and most prestigious art societies in the world, and election to the Society as a Signature Member is a highly coveted honor. Membership in the Society has included many of the greatest names in painting, including the great American Impressionist Childe Hassam, the well-known regionalists Edward Hopper and Charles Burchfield, plus virtually every member of the important “California School” of watercolorists, including the late Andrew Wyeth.

“We received the exhibit from the galleries of the historic Salmagundi Club located at 47 Fifth Avenue, in the heart of the Greenwich Village section of Manhattan, and this year’s award winning paintings are very exciting,” Keller said.

Catalogs of the exhibition are available for sale in the Abraham Gallery, and proceeds of the sales will go to the Art Scholarship fund. The exhibit is free and open to the public, and group tours are welcome. Gallery hours are Monday to Thursday from 10 to 5, Friday from 10 to 4, and Saturday from 2 to 5, or by special arrangement. The Abraham Art Gallery is located in the Atrium level of the Mabee Learning Resource Center on the campus of Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas.  For more information, call 806-291-3710.
