Richard Fountain to perform recital
PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University Associate Professor of Piano Dr. Richard Fountain will present a solo piano recital, "Responses to Suffering" Thursday, Sept. 1 in Harral Auditorium at 7 p.m. Featured on the program will be Sergei Prokofiev’s Sixth Sonata, Franz Liszt’s “Weinen, Klagen” variations, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s final sonata, Op. 111. Admission to the concert is free and open to the public.
According to Dr. Fountain, the impetus for this program comes from a need to show how music can directly respond to tragedy.
"I think it is critical to show people outside our 'inner circle' of professional musicians what it is that makes us dedicate our lives to this pursuit. Even though the music on this program is from 75 to 200 years old, human nature has not changed. We still have war, we still have disease, we still live in a fallen world,” Fountain said. “What I am presenting are eloquent musical responses to these realities; I believe they transcend time and culture to speak to our own situation today."
