Wayland to hold commencement on Saturday
May 3, 2015
PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University’s Plainview campus will hold its spring graduation ceremony on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Hutcherson Center, with 115 graduates scheduled to participate, pending final grades.
Degrees will be conferred on 83 undergraduate and 32 graduate students, including Wayland’s first-ever graduate from the Master of Divinity program. Damon Pearce, of Clovis, N.M., will graduate with the degree on Saturday. The M.Div. is an intensive degree program that is the standard professional degree for those entering Christian ministry. The Biblical Languages Track is an 86-hour program. Students have the option to forgo the languages, however, and complete an 80-hour program.
Wayland began offering the M.Div. in 2013 as one of the few distinctively Baptist degree programs offered completely online.
Two students will be graduating with honors. Jessica Kenneson of Colorado Springs and Emileigh Willems of Lubbock will each receive a Bachelor of Science with Honors degree. Kenneson majored in chemistry and Willems completed her degree in mathematics. Both students were recently recognized during an honors program luncheon at which time they gave a brief synopsis of their research theses.
Kenneson was trying to determine the cause of mutation in tuberculosis and in the process, along with her research supervisor Dr. Robert Moore, developed a new imaging system that can do the work of much more expensive, specialized models.
Willems developed her research project around mathematical graph theory.
Saturday’s events will include a ring ceremony for those graduates interested in participating. The event is hosted by Danny Andrews and the alumni office. The ring ceremony begins at 9 a.m.
Following the ring ceremony, graduates will take part in the Torch and Mantle. The ceremony is a chance for graduates to honor someone who has been a mentor to them throughout their college career, as well as recognizing and underclassmen who has played a special role in their development.
The graduation luncheon, where graduates receive final instructions, will be held in the Pete and Nelda Laney Student Activities Center at approximately 11:30. Following the graduation ceremony, graduates and their family members are invited to a reception in the Laney Center where they may visit, take pictures and enjoy some refreshments.
The graduation ceremony will be streamed online at www.wbuathletics.com.
