Graduates gather for December Commencement

PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University held its December Commencement exercise Saturday afternoon with 78 students receiving their diplomas.

Jessica Echols, an economics and finance major receiving her Bachelor of Business Administration degree, from Diana, was recognized as the highest ranking graduate. Tyler Moore, a business administration and religion major from Fritch gave the student address.

Moore challenged his fellow graduates to not settle, but continue to grow and get better.

“By no means do I want to take this moment of reflection away from you,” he said. “What I do want to do, thought, is encourage you to turn around and look at what’s in front of you. Because from that peak, you can see that there are a lot more mountains to climb.”

Moore said it is important to continue to grow in three basic areas. First, he said everyone should grow in their knowledge of the Bible. Secondly, they should grow in faith, and third, they should grow in love of God and mankind. Moore encouraged students to study for their new tests as they move from the Wayland classroom, to the classroom of life.

“We are in a class that is a whole lot bigger than the 20 to 30 that we are used to hear at Wayland,” Moore said. “We have about 7 billion classmates and a teacher who, no offense to (Wayland faculty), is and will be the best we have ever had.

“If this is all a test, the Bible is the most important textbook we will ever have. God already put all the answers to the test we are going to face in there. He has written a narrative that told us how He has already taken the test for us.”

Wayland President Dr. Paul Armes added to Moore’s statements, reminding graduates that a leader is someone who serves.

“In many ways that is what Tyler has been saying to you,” Armes said. “As you serve Christ and you serve our world, you will find God’s greatest destiny for your lives.”

Armes closed by challenging graduates to encourage each other and to listen to the encouragement of Jesus saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
