New faculty, staff open semester at Wayland

PLAINVIEW – As the Fall 2015 semester gets underway this week, several new faculty and staff members are experiencing the academic year for the first time at Wayland Baptist University.

In a new position, Chad Cain hit the ground running in August as the Executive Director of Admission and Recruiting. In this position, Cain will focus primarily on recruiting allowing Director of Admission Debbie Stennett to focus on the admissions processes.

A graduate of Wayland, Cain earned a bachelor’s degree in religion and business administration in 1998. He completed his Master of Arts in Theology degree at Fuller theological Seminary in 2003. Cain has worked as an admissions counselor at Baylor University and Fuller, as well as serving as Coordinator of Graduate Student Recruitment at Indiana University and later as Director of Admissions for Processing and Advising at Fuller. He has also worked in the admissions office at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Cain married Meredith Runyan, also a WBU grad and Miss Wayland 1994.

The School of Behavioral and Social Sciences added two new faculty members. Dr. Colleen Mruzik was named assistant professor of justice and public administration and will teach online courses, and Dr. Deidre Redmond was named assistant professor of sociology.

Dr. Mruzik has taught at Wayland as an adjunct professor since 2012. She holds a Jurist Doctorate from the Saint Louis School of Law, completing the degree in 2010. Mruzik also holds a master of arts from Abilene Christian University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami. She has also served as an adjunct professor for Hardin-Simmons University.

Dr. Redmond comes to Wayland after serving as an assistant professor of sociology and Murray State University in Murray, Ky. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Indiana University (2013) as well as a master’s degree from IU (2007). She earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and political science from Adrian College.

Dr. Matthew Allen joins the School of Mathematics and Sciences as Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences. Dr. Allen earned his Ph.D. in plant sciences from Oklahoma State University in 2010. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Hastings College. He comes to Wayland from Seminole State College where he was an assistant professor of life sciences. He has also worked as a lecturer for Oklahoma State.

Dr. Kennith Freemen will fill the position of Assistant Professor of Piano in the School of Music. Freeman earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Memphis in 2009. He also earned a master’s degree at Memphis and his bachelor’s degree in applied piano and English from Pepperdine University. He comes to Wayland from Union University where he served as staff accompanist and an adjunct faculty member. He has also taught at Mid-South Community College in West Memphis, Ark.

Christian Ospina has been promoted from Interim Coach to Head Coach of the men’s soccer program. A former Pioneer player, Ospina earned his bachelor’s degree in justice administration from Wayland in 2014. He will also serve as a lecturer for exercise and sports science in the School of Education.

The Office of Advancement has named Amber McCloud as the new Director of Development. McCloud comes to Wayland after serving as marketing specialist for Prosperity Bank in Lubbock since 2011. McCloud has more than 10 years of experience in marketing and brand management. She was named Young Professionals of Greater Lubbock 20 Under 40 Recipient in 2014. He husband, Bobby McCloud, was recently named Director of Development for Wayland’s Lubbock campus.
