Wayland to host McCoy Lecture Series

March 13, 2014

PLAINVIEW -- First Baptist Church in Plainview and Wayland Baptist University will host the McCoy Missions Lecture Series featuring the Rev. Paulo Lino from Salvador, Brazil, March 18-19.

Rev. Lino will also speak in Dr. Shaw’s Contemporary Christian Missions class on Tuesday, March 18, at 1:45 p.m. On Wednesday, he will speak at Wayland’s regularly scheduled chapel service at 11 a.m. as well as being the guest speaker at 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church.

The pastor of Sinai Baptist Church in Brazil, Lino has been instrumental in Wayland’s association with the Baptist Convention of Brazil. Led by Dr. Richard Shaw, Director of the Wayland Mission Center, WBU students have had the opportunity to travel to Brazil for mission opportunities. Shaw said Brazil is quickly becoming a nation active in mission work, sending missionaries around the world.

The McCoy Lecture Series was developed by First Baptist Church with an estate gift from the late Dr. Dorothy McCoy, distinguished professor emeritus in mathematics at Wayland and a longtime member of FBC Plainview. McCoy had a passion for missions, and she served six months in Malawi, Africa, after her retirement from Wayland, later traveling to Indonesia for short-term mission work. She also hosted a missions emphasis gathering for Wayland students and others through the church for many years. McCoy died in November 2001.

The lecture seeks to honor McCoy’s passion for missions and sharing the Gospel.
