Lubbock area foundation supports the children's chorus of Plainview

May 5, 2012

PLAINVIEW – The Children’s Chorus of Plainview performed its annual spring concert last Sunday, April 29, in Wayland Baptist University’s Harral Memorial Auditorium. The choir used the opportunity to salute former and active members of the United States Military.

The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Honor Guard posted the colors and the choir performed the national anthem. The group, consisting of children ages 8-14, performed several choral numbers, including “Thank You Soldiers” by Michael and Angela Souders. Individuals also performed solo and ensemble pieces.

Following a brief intermission, the choir shifted gears, returning to stage in period dress to perform hit songs from the 1960s and 80s.

Directed by Dr. Debra Flournoy-Buford, the Children’s Chorus performs two concerts a year. Auditions are held for scholarships, funded by the Lubbock Area Foundation. The Children’s Chorus of Plainview is part of Wayland Baptist University’s Academy of Fine Arts. The AFA exists to encourage children to explore music and the arts.

Wayland received a $1,500 grant from the Lubbock Area Foundation (LAF) to fund the children’s choir. The grant provides scholarships to help offset the cost of enrollment in the program.
