Wayland to host run & walk II

January 20, 2012

PLAINVIEW –Wayland Baptist University will host its second annual Run & Walk event on Saturday, April 7, at J.V. Hilliard field located at 8th and Xenia in Plainview.

Sponsored by the Office of Human Resources, the event is held in conjunction with Wayland’s wellness program. Over the past few years, the wellness program has resulted in a significant decrease in insurance claims, and cheaper insurance rates for its employees. Director of Human Resources Ron Appling coordinates the event as a means to encourage and educate people about the benefits of regular exercise.

“I want to continue to promote healthy events for Plainview residents,” Appling said. “I also want to provide an opportunity so people don’t have to travel to participate in an event like this.”

The Run & Walk will consist of a half marathon as well as 10K, 5K and 1-mile walk. Contestants will be divided by age and gender in each event. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers overall in each event, as well as the top male and female in each age division. Everyone who completes the half marathon will receive a medal.

Registration and packet pick-up will be held from 7:30-8:30 a.m. the day of the event. Racing will begin at 9 a.m. with the half marathon followed by the 1-mile walk at 9:15. The 5K and 10K events will begin at 9:30 a.m. An awards ceremony will be held at the end of each race.

The half marathon is a 13.1-mile trek that begins at Hilliard Field and winds through Plainview. The course will remain inside the city limits, although it may push the boundaries in some places. The race will be open for four hours. The 5K is approximately 3.1 miles and the 10K is 6.2 miles.

Registration for the half marathon is $40 and participants must register in advance. No race-day registrations will be taken for the half marathon. Participation in the 1-mile walk is $10 and the 5K and 10K cost $20 for registrations received prior to March 30. Registration on the day of the race will cost $30. Entry fees include a Dri-FIT T-shirt. Water and snacks will be provided before, during and after the races.
