WBU baseball hosting Emily Jones and the Texas Rangers

January 18, 2012

PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University is rolling out the hot dog cart in preparation for the upcoming baseball season, and inviting the public to a “Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Wilder Field” reception at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24, in Wayland’s Pete and Nelda Laney Student Activities Center.

The event will feature Plainview native and Fox Sports personality Emily Jones as well as players and coaches from the American League Champion Texas Rangers baseball team. The event is being held to open a fundraising campaign to install field turf at Wilder Field.  Wayland has already acquired the turf, but needs to raise the money needed for the cost of installation.

“We hope people will come out and get excited about what we are trying to accomplish. We want to ‘Raise the Turf,’” said Wayland’s Director of Corporate Development Mike Melcher. “Wilder Field is already one of the nicest baseball facilities around, but the addition of the field turf will make it a spectacular baseball venue.”

The event will include free hot dogs, apple pie and other baseball items to the first 500 guests. T-shirts will be given out to the kids in attendance and everyone will have a chance to meet Jones and members of the Texas Rangers organization.

The evening’s program will consist of Pioneers Coach Brad Bass talking about his team and upcoming season. Wayland officials will then discuss the fundraising program and the need for the field turf. Then Jones and the Rangers will close out the program with a few words.

“The evening should be a lot of fun,” Melcher said. “We will get a chance to meet our own players as well as hear from some of the Rangers. I can’t think of a better way to open the baseball season.”

The Pioneer baseball season begins with a doubleheader against University of the Southwest at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, at Wilder Field.

Admission to the event is free and open to the public.
