WBU, LCU Choirs join for Concert
April 12, 2012
PLAINVIEW – The Wayland Baptist University School of Music will join with Lubbock Christian University for a joint choir concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Harral Memorial Auditorium. This is the third year for the collaboration that features Wayland’s International Choir and the Wayland Singers, along with the Praise Chorus and Chamber Singers from LCU.
The choirs will join voices to perform George Frideric Handel’s Coronation Anthems. The 100-voice choir will be accompanied by an orchestra. Portions of the Coronation Anthems have been used at every British coronation since 1727. Born in Germany, Handel established himself as an English composer in part due to his Coronation Anthems. The anthems were first performed at the 1727 coronation just a few months after Handel became a naturalized English citizen.
Along with the combined choir, the evening will feature separate performances by the four choirs. The LCU choirs are directed by Dr. Philip Camp, Director of Choral Activities. The Wayland choirs are directed by Mr. Robert Black, Director of Church Music Studies, and Dr. Scott Herrington, Director of Choral Studies. The groups joined in 2008 for their first collaborative, performing Mozart’s Vespers.
Admission to Saturday’s performance is free and open to the public.
