November 10, 2011

LUBBOCK – Marcheta and Max Gabriel, of Plainview, were honored Thursday afternoon at the 16th Annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon held at the Lubbock Country Club and sponsored by the Lubbock area chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The Gabriels were recognized for their outstanding contributions to Wayland Baptist University and received the 2011 Spirit of Philanthropy Award. Max, who has served as a trustee for Wayland for 18 years, and Marcheta have generously given throughout the years, helping to furnish the prayer chapel on the fourth floor of the Maybee Learning Resources Center. They also provided the six stained glass windows in the chapel honoring the Gabriel family and in memory of their son, Kyle.

The Gabriels are also the first family to have endowed scholarships at Wayland representing three generations. Max, along with his brothers Frank and Jim, and their mother Margaret endowed a scholarship in 1984 in memory of Max’s father George Gabriel. The George Gabriel endowed scholarship was the first scholarship to be represented in Wayland’s Hall of Honor. In 2008, the Gabriel family endowed two more scholarships, the Max and Marcheta Gabriel scholarship and the Kyle Gabriel and Tiffani Gabriel-Wright scholarship.
