Miss Wayland to host Alzheimer's Awareness event
March 25, 2011
PLAINVIEW – Miss Wayland Baptist University Jovanna Barrera of Plainview is hosting a luncheon to bring awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and to pay homage to the people who care for Alzheimer’s patients on a regular basis.
With help from the Hale County Alzheimer’s Support Group, the April 9 event will feature information about the disease, presented by Dr. Victor Gutierrez, a local psychiatrist, and a luncheon. Booths from 21 different vendors will also be featured for more information for attendees.
Entertainment for the event will consists of a style show featuring 40 models from the community who will be exhibiting fashions from Maurice's, Kristi’s and JCPenney Outlet along with their own clothing.
Barrera, a junior business administration major, said the style show will feature a formal portion as well as a more fun portion aimed at just having a relaxing, enjoyable afternoon for attendees. Mark Pair of Plainview will provide piano music during the luncheon and style show.
“We want to give caregivers a chance to sit back and relax and not worry about anything else that day and just be honored since they go through this every day,” said Barrera. “Alzheimer’s is a disease that is growing rapidly and many people just look past it. I wanted to bring more attention to it in Plainview and spark some knowledge about it. Maybe through our efforts we can also do something to help stop it.”
Barrera noted that she has a heart for this cause because her own grandfather, Manuel Ramirez, is in the early stages of the disease and she has seen first-hand the affects on both patients and families. After being crowned Miss Wayland in November, she decided to put her efforts into awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease and the event was birthed out of that desire.
The luncheon will be held at the Multipurpose Room at Wayland. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.
