Speakers encourage 'no fear' attitude to new Wayland graduates
May 8, 2010
PLAINVIEW – While events of the past few months may bring plenty of reason for anxiety, Russell Daniel urged his fellow graduates of Wayland Baptist University to have a “no fear” attitude toward the future.
As the senior class speaker for the Plainview commencement ceremony held at Hutcherson Center, Daniel mentioned that while the fear of the Lord is the beginning of true wisdom as the Proverb says, that doesn’t mean life is to be feared.
“The last few years of our lives have been pretty predictable, but the future is never really predictable,” Daniel said. “We experience a lot of fear and uncertainty in life, but there is one who knows the future and that is the Lord God almighty.”
Daniel encouraged his classmates with the words of Joshua, to “be strong and courageous, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
“God gives us hope and a peace that passes all understanding. But we have to trust in Him,” Daniel said. “Our world needs people to stand up for what’s right, offer them hope and something solid.”
Wayland president Dr. Paul Armes gave a brief charge to graduates as well, urging them not to underestimate their power to change the world or the impact of faith in Christ on their lives.
“And it really does matter how you live,” he said. “It speaks to who you are.”
The ceremony also included conferring of an honorary Bachelor of Letters degree on Delbert McDougal, a member of Wayland’s Board of Trustees and a longtime developer in Lubbock. Dr. Patricia Herman, who retired in 2009 after 16 years as professor of education, was presented the honor of emeritus status. In a departure from the printed program, Armes also led the audience in a brief moment of silence for James Hogue, a member of the School of Business faculty who died unexpectedly on Thursday. His seat in the faculty lineup was left empty in his memory.
Seniors participating in the ceremony included Kevin Burrow of Tulia, leading the invocation; Kiana Bullard of Borger, leading the pledge; Khrystyne Eckerd of Ruidoso, N.M., reading the scripture; Jon Michael Clifton of Sunrise Beach, leading the hymn; Jordan Nelson of Ralls introducing the senior speaker; Terra Watson of Plainview, presenting special music; and Rebecca Ballinger of Lubbock, directing the alma mater.
Armes recognized four seniors as highest ranking, all graduating with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. They are Lauren Davis of Red Oak, Kirby Dunn of Bowie, Vincent Robles of Post and Alayna Siebman of Childress.
