February 8, 2010
Wayland Baptist University has announced the hiring of Kristen Jones as coach of the new Competitive Cheer and Dance program. Jones is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University where she was a member of and later an assistant coach for the nationally-ranked SFA Pom Squad. Most recently Jones has served as the assistant director of the national champion McLennan Community College Dance Company.
Dr. Greg Feris, Director of Athletics at Wayland, says that the university is very fortunate to find someone of Jones's background and knowledge. "We wanted someone who embraced the vision that we have for our Competitive Cheer and Dance Program. This is a young woman who brings a wealth of experience and skill to both areas. Not only has Kristen been a staff member of two of the most successful c competitive dance programs in the country she has also worked for the National Cheer Association as a camp director and clinician. She will bring excitement, energy and a real passion to succeed to yet another element of a growing intercollegiate athletics program.”
As a member of the American Dance and Drill Team staff and the Universal Cheerleaders Association, Jones teaches clinics and camps, and judges cheer and dance team try-outs and contests across the nation. She also taught and developed gymnastic and competitive dance programs for two years for the Boys & Girls Club of Deep East Texas. Last fall, she was nominated for consideration to receive a NISOD Excellence Award.
Jones, who is currently an adjunct professor at both McLennan CC and Baylor University, received a bachelor's degree in communication advertising with a minor in kinesiology from SFA in 2005, and is pursuing a Master of Applied Arts and Sciences degree from Stephen F. Austin.
