Geological Society to host community cleanup effort

April 9, 2010

PLAINVIEW – The Wayland Baptist University Geological Society will host a community and campus cleanup day in celebration of Earth Day on Saturday, April 24.

The 40th anniversary of the environmentally friendly celebration of Earth Day will be April 22, and the group is hoping Wayland students and employees as well as community friends will show up in full force to make Plainview a cleaner place to live.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. with participants gathering at the Moody Science Building on the Wayland campus, located at approximately 7th and Smythe Streets just west of the McClung Center. From there, groups will be formed and sent out to various parts of the community to pick up litter and do light cleanup tasks. The City of Plainview, who is helping sponsor the event, has assigned areas that need particular attention in the community.

Wal-Mart and Covenant Hospital Plainview are also helping sponsor the event by providing healthy snacks and drinks for the workers as well as first responders.

According to WBUGS president Alvaro Nunez, the group will be recycling everything they collect during the day utilizing the blue bins placed around the city by Plainview’s recycling center.

The event will last as long as participants are able or until the cleanup projects are done. Anyone is welcome to help for even short periods of time.
