Release Date: September 23, 2009

PLAINVIEW – With enrollment numbers in system wide, Wayland Baptist University is showing a 2.4% decrease in the number of students, dropping the number to 5,887 students enrolled at 13 campuses and online.

Yet while the numbers dropped system wide, Plainview shows a 1.86 percent increase with 1,207 students enrolled. Plainview enrolled 975 undergraduate students for the Fall 2009 semester, down from 992 a year ago. However, graduate enrollment increased from 245 to 285 students. The trend continued system wide as graduate numbers increased by more than 9 percent.

Undergraduate enrollment, however, dropped 5.47 percent across the system. Sierra Vista, Ariz., was the only campus to show an increase in undergraduate enrollment with 234 students enrolled, up from 215. In graduate studies, only two campuses, Lubbock and Wichita Falls, registered a decrease in enrollment.

Wayland’s virtual campus continues to grow as enrollment in online classes and programs increased nearly 8 percent. Online graduate programs alone increased nearly 20 percent while undergraduate students increased 2.6 percent.

Credit hours dropped 2.75 percent overall and 1.23 percent on the Plainview campus. While graduate students increased, they typically do not take as many hours as undergraduate students, accounting for the drop in credit hours. Altus, Okla., saw major increases in credit hours (71.37 percent) and enrollment (47.37 percent).

Based in Plainview, Wayland operates campuses in Lubbock, Amarillo, Wichita Falls and San Antonio, Texas, Clovis and Albuquerque, N.M., Phoenix and Sierra Vista, Ariz., Anchorage and Fairbanks, AK., Altus, Okla., and Aeia, Hawaii. Wayland also offers degree programs in Kenya, Africa, but those numbers are not factored into enrollment.
