Morris takes reins in Sierra Vista

Release Date: November 4, 2009

SIERRA VISTA, ARIZ. – Dr. Robert Morris has been named to take over as Executive Director of the Wayland Baptist University campus in Sierra Vista, Ariz., effective Nov. 16. Morris will take the post vacated by Dr. Jeff Barnes, who transferred from the Sierra Vista campus to lead Wayland’s campus in Aiea, Hawaii.

Morris is no stranger to Wayland, having worked within the university system since May 2002. Morris was first hired at Wayland as an assistant to the dean of the Phoenix campus. In 2004, he transferred to the San Antonio campus, where he served as Director for the Institute for Professional Development.

A retired Army officer, Morris holds a Ph.D. in International Management. He spent 30 years in the U.S. Army from 1966-96. In 1997, Morris took a position as Director of Human Resources for the City of Surprise, Ariz., where he worked for three years.

Morris is looking forward to his return to Arizona, in particular, working at Fort Huachuca. Morris is a fifth-generation Army officer whose great grandfather was stationed at the fort as a Buffalo Soldier. Morris said he can think of nothing better than returning to Arizona and working for an organization in which he truly believes.

“I believe in the Christian approach and in what the university stands for,” he said. “This is my opportunity to pay back this university by working in an environment where I can build something … build minds, careers … and capitalize on hope.”

Wayland Baptist University has been offering classes at Fort Huachuca since 1997 and opened an office in town in 2003. The campus offers four 11-week terms per years and students may earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
