Corporate Spelling Bee seeking team entries
Release Date: August 21, 2009
Held in conjunction with the Plainview Pioneer Palooza, the bee will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Laney Student Activities Center, followed by games with the Wayland athletes for families from 2:30-5 p.m.
The bee will pit teams of four adult spellers from local businesses, schools, churches and organizations against each other for friendly competition and to raise funds for two good causes. Proceeds will be split between scholarships for future educators in KDP as well as the Hale County Literacy Council, a United Way agency that provides tutoring for adults learning to read, GED and citizenship tutoring, and family literacy programs.
Non-stellar spellers will still enjoy the event, as the word list starts out easier and teams are allowed to confer for 30 seconds on a word before sending one team member to the microphone to spell. Part of the fun includes the option for teams to pass on a word they don’t wish to spell, at a cost of $10, or pass to a specific competing team for $20. The event encourages business co-workers to cheer on their team and get spirited during the competition. There is no admission charge for audience members.
“This is really meant to be a fun event where teams enjoy seeing who they can outsmart, all while supporting a good cause,” said Teresa Young, co-organizer of the event with the KDP officers. “It’s not really about whether you can spell perfectly but just about having fun. Last year’s event was really spirited and I think the groups enjoyed just the camaraderie and doing something different together.”
Entry fees are $100 per team, with a discounted rate of $50 for schools. The winner will receive a trophy and bragging rights. Last year’s winner was American State Bank.
Teams can be composed of adults from any organization, business or just a group of friends wanting to enter the competition. Entry forms and a list of specific rules are available by calling Teresa in the WBU Public Relations office at 291-3585. Deadline to enter teams is Sept. 4.
