Centennial singing, service events for fall coming soon

PLAINVIEW – Two more events in conjunction with the Centennial Celebration are on tap this coming week at Wayland Baptist University.

The month kicks off Sunday with the Centennial Hymn Sing from 3-4 p.m. at College Heights Baptist Church, located at 802 Quincy just east of the WBU campus. The event will feature a relaxed sing-along format of the most-loved hymns of the past century, with help from the Wayland Handbell Ensemble.

Area churches are invited to participate in the Hymn Sing and anyone wishing to sing in the choir may do so. The event is free and open to the public.

Then on Wednesday, formal construction begins on the Habitat for Humanity house being built on the Wayland campus at 8th and Yonkers. While the pier-and-beam foundation has been started, the majority of the work will take place over four days beginning at noon Wednesday, Oct. 8, following a groundbreaking chapel at the site.

Teams of volunteers will work in shifts from noon-6 p.m. and 6 p.m. to midnight that night, then resume at 7 a.m. for a shift through noon. Shifts will repeat through midnight Saturday, Oct. 11. At that point, the house will be moved to the Habitat neighborhood at 28th and Joliet and completed. The family receiving the house has Wayland ties and will be working alongside the volunteers for most of the building blitz, which is a partnership effort with the First Baptist Church as a mission project.

Volunteers over the age of 16 from all churches and organizations in town are welcome for the project. Morning shifts have the greatest need for volunteers, according to project organizer Charlotte Schumacher, WBU Webmaster, though some afternoon shifts could also use help. Evening shifts are booked solid.

Also featured during October is the Fall Choral Festival on Oct. 23, featuring the premiere of the commissioned Centennial anthem by the International Choir and other WBU music groups.
