Mayfield publishes paper in journal, presents at conference
Release Date: May 23, 2008
PLAINVIEW – Dr. Arch Mayfield, professor of English at Wayland Baptist University, published a paper recently in a scholarly journal and presented at a conference.
The article, titled “How Dubious is Our Battle?” was published in volume three of Voices, the San Antonio College Multicultural Journal. The article deals with the role of literature of all genres to ignite action to effect change in society. Referencing John Steinbeck’s novel In Dubious Battle, Mayfield notes that several works throughout time have encouraged readers to act on behalf of justice and social issues in whatever “communities” one is involved. Mayfield used examples during his teaching career of spurring himself and students to social action to illustrate the point of literature’s role in those encounters.
Mayfield presented a paper titled “Pigment of the Imagination” at San Antonio College’s 14th Annual Multicultural Conference, an interdisciplinary gathering in conjunction with the city’s Fiesta each year. The paper dealt with literary, pop culture and contemporary expressions and emphases of skin lightening and darkening. He has presented at that conference for three consecutive years.
Mayfield has been on the WBU faculty since 1973.
