WBU cheerleaders nab national title for second year
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The cheerleaders of Wayland Baptist University walked away with another national championship trophy at the Christian Cheerleaders of America national competition held over spring break.
The co-ed squad performed their 2 ½ minute routine of stunts, cheering, tumbling and dance two times during the day of competition, with judges taking a composite score of the two performances.
During the two days of the event, the Wayland squad also helped the CCA staff set up for various competitions, providing a valuable service.
Richard Varnon, a 2006 graduate who cheered for Wayland for several years, serves as cheerleading coach. The squad consists of seniors Evan Winegarner of Darrouzett and Christie Ward of Hale Center; juniors Shalisa Ladd of Muleshoe and Missy Pawelek of Lovington, N.M.; sophomores Whitney Hall of Amarillo, A.J. Haney of Shallowater, Jeremy Huffhines of Hale Center, Ashley Reynolds of New Deal, Allen Melton of Roswell, N.M., and Molly Flowers of Amarillo; and freshmen Tana Smith of Lockney, Lauren Grice of Clinton, N.C., and Marisa Garza of Levelland.
