Community Classroom Offering Courses for Winter
PLAINVIEW – The Community Classroom at Wayland Baptist University will offer a variety of classes for the winter meant to enrich and expand horizons.
A class in conversational Spanish will be offered Monday and Thursday nights beginning Jan. 29 and running through March 9, set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the classroom, located at 708 Yonkers. The course aims to improve Spanish-speaking skills for residents and is especially helpful for those who work in the public sector and encounter non-English speaking residents. Cost for the course is $400, which includes all instructional materials.
A returning favorite is the quilting course in traditional handpiecing, offered on Mondays from Feb. 5 through March 26 from 6-8 p.m. Taught by Lee Baird, the quilting class is designed to teach the traditional craft of making quilts through handpiecing, including skills of selecting, marking and cutting fabric, designing quilt patterns, binding and piecing sections for a quilt top. Participants will create a six-block lap quilt at the conclusion of the class. Cost is $65.
English as a Second Language at the intermediate level is being offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. through March 8. Led by Lynette Bowen, these courses utilize computer instruction as well as small group and individual instruction. Cost is $160 for the term.
Comedy Defensive Driving will be offered Jan. 29 and 30 from 6:15 to 9:15 p.m. This monthly offering must be attended both nights to receive the full credit, which is good for automobile insurance discounts or to dismiss tickets. Cost is $30.
The monthly Literary Lunch Bunch group will meet again on Feb. 6 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the classroom. There is no charge for this group, which meets to discuss books of interest, facilitated by Michael Summers. The Community Classroom continues to offer individualized instruction in computer skills, with offerings in Basic Computing, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Outlook, Access, Excel, Publisher and Quickbooks.
