Aven to be honored by WBU SIFE Team
PLAINVIEW – Sandra Aven will be honored as one of three Women in Business Award winners during a banquet hosted by the Students in Free Enterprise team at Wayland Baptist University on Aug. 30.
Publisher of the Plainview Daily Herald since January 2006, Aven was previously resident controller at the newspaper for ten years and served as office manager for a year prior to that. She has also worked as office manager for two other companies and as a arbitrage clerk, a commodity broker and a clerk.
Aven is a graduate of Plainview High School and is working on her bachelor’s degree in business administration at Wayland. She is also a licensed commodity broker.
An active member of the community, Aven is a graduate of Leadership Plainview and a past member of the National Futures Association and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
She serves on the board of the YMCA and has held the presidency and vice presidencies of that board several times. She is also on the board of the Plainview Area United Way, the Wee Care Child Care Center and the Community Partners of the Central Plains (Rainbow Room), serving as the founding president of that group in 1999. She is a member of the Rotary Club and a past member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and Toastmasters.
Named Woman of the Year by the Plainview Chamber of Commerce in 2005, Aven is on the board of the Plainview/Hale County Industrial Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce. She also served on the SIFE Advisory Board, the Division of Business Advisory Council, Plainview Main Street, the WBU child development center and women’s division of the chamber.
She was honored by the Hearst Corporation with the Eagle Award for 1996 and the President’s Call to Service Award in 2004, and was named Young Careerist by the B&PW Club in 1994.
Aven and her husband Brett have a son, Chance, 15, a sophomore at Plainview High. She is a member of College Heights Baptist Church.
The SIFE Women in Business banquet is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30 in Room 211 of the McClung University Center on the WBU campus. Tickets are $15 per person, which includes a buffet dinner and the awards presentation program, featuring Carolyn Baker, executive vice president of Hale County State Bank as keynote speaker.
Other 2007 honorees include Jan Alford, State Farm agent, and family physician Dr. Ruth Rector-Wright.
