AFA registration to be held Aug. 14

PLAINVIEW – The Academy of Fine arts at Wayland Baptist University is gearing up for its fall term. Registration for classes will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Aug. 14 in the Harral Memorial Auditorium Fine Arts Center.

The Academy of Fine Arts provides individuals from childhood through high school age with private and group lessons in music, theatre and art. Continuing a long tradition, the Academy will offer private lessons in piano and guitar. Students will be responsible for preparing weekly performance assignments and will have the opportunity to perform in semester recitals and other local venues. The fee is $12.50 per lesson, or $150 per semester.

The Academy has added a Melody Chime ensemble for students ages 7-10 and will likely add a hand bell ensemble as these students become more advanced. Students will rehearse one hour per week for 12 weeks. The cost is $30 a month or $90 for the semester.

The AFA has also redesigned its vocal music training offerings. Children from birth to 6 years old may sign up for the Kindermusik International or Music Together programs taught by certified instructors. The Kindermusik program is designed to encourage young children and parents to explore music. The program bases its curricula on proven research in child development, combining music and movement to teach not only the child, but parents as well.

The Kindermusik courses will be taught by Leslie Delgado in the tradition begun by Jennie Lynn Hodges. Delgado has recently completed her international certification and will be offering four courses each with a different theme. Students from birth to 6 years will purchase home instrument packages for each course and should look forward to a dynamic experience with their instruments and song. Fees for Kindermusik classes are $150 for a semester ($75 for the 8-week course for children ages birth-18 months). Instrument fees range from $28 to $70 depending on the courses.

The Music Together curriculum is designed for family participation (one or two parents along with one or more children) in nine separate courses spanning a three-year period. Students from birth to 6 years are integrated into a single class in a unique setting featuring song and movement. Families are required to purchase a songbook and two CDs – one for home and one for the car. Music Together courses cost $30 per month ($90 per semester) with a $35 materials fee per course.

The Children’s Chorus of Plainview is designed for students ages 7-11. Led by Debbie Flournoy, the choir meets weekly and prepares music in a diverse array of musical styles. Students are expected to purchase a uniform and attend rehearsals regularly. The class fee is $30 per month for three months along with a $15 fee for the music. The uniform cost will vary.

Students ages 12-18 will be able to enroll in advanced vocal training classes through Vocal Technique Classes or private lessons as approved upon audition. Vocal Technique Classes are designed to introduce students to advanced singing techniques. Private vocal students will be responsible for preparing weekly performance assignments and will have the opportunity to perform in semester recitals and other local venues. The cost for Vocal Technique Classes is $30 per month, or $90 per semester. Private lessons cost $12.50 per lesson or $150 per semester.

Art courses will also be offered through the AFA based on student interest. Contact the coordinator for specific offerings in the art realm.
