Enrollments slightly down at Wayland Baptist University

PLAINVIEW -- Wayland Baptist University experienced a slight drop in enrollment from the previous year when official counts were recorded.

The overall system enrollment was 5,712, down 6.5 percent from 2005’s enrollment of 6,110. The home campus in Plainview reported an enrollment of 1,072, down 4.6 percent from last year’s 1,124 final count.

Most of the WBU system’s external campuses experienced a decrease in enrollment, affected in great part by the military deployments on bases where Wayland has campuses. Only the Albuquerque, N.M. and Sierra Vista, Ariz., campuses had a gain for the year. The external campuses reported total enrollment of 4,630.

Many of those campuses experience fluctuating enrollments by term, with four 11-week terms offered annually, and several experience rising enrollments in the spring and summer. However, official enrollment figures are based on fall enrollments, as is the customary practice in higher education.

Credit hours were down slightly as well, with 38,950 hours total systemwide (a 7.48 percent drop).
