Pair Offers Piano Recital
PLAINVIEW – The Wayland Baptist University Division of Fine Arts, Department of Music presents Mark Anthony Pair, Piano Artist in Residence, in a faculty concert featuring “Piano Selections of Edvard Grieg,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 28 in Harral Memorial Auditorium.
Pair served as an associate professor of music at Wayland for 36 years, performing 72 piano faculty concerts, one per semester. He has performed five additional concerts in retirement. Pair’s forte is in selecting works by a single composer.
Edvard Hagerup Grieg was a Norwegian composer of the late romantic era transcending into the Impressionism of the early 20th century. It is said that Grieg was romantic, falling in love and marrying at an early age. His music is said to reflect his love life, embodied with the nationalism of folk songs and dances from his Scandinavian country. He desired to write poetry for the piano as well as the orchestra and vocal arrangements.
Featured in the program are three of Grieg’s main categories of piano works. He wrote 10 sets or opus numbers of lyric pieces, numerous sets of original piano works and composite piano works. Those works include “Morning Mood,” “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” Butterfly,” “Notturno,” “To Spring” and “Wedding Day at Troldhaugen.” In these selections, one can visualize snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, fjords, the midnight sun and mountainsides covered with goats and flowers, all portraying a song of love or sorrow.
Admission to Pair’s performance is free of charge and open to the public.
