Bishop named dean of Wayland Baptist University's Lubbock Campus
PLAINVIEW – Dr. David Bishop, currently the dean of the Amarillo campus of Wayland Baptist University, has been named the new dean of the Lubbock campus, effective Jan. 1.
Bishop has led the Amarillo campus since 2000, coming into that position from the dean’s role at the Sierra Vista, Ariz., campus for two years. At Lubbock, he replaces longtime dean Dr. Kent Brooks, who is stepping down to work in development for the campus. Besides his administrative role, Bishop also is associate professor of religion and philosophy.
He is excited about the challenge of the new position and working with the well established campus in Lubbock.
“I look forward to continuing the good work and building on the foundation that has already been laid. I am honored to be working with Dr. Brooks and the Lubbock Campus staff and faculty as we look to the future,” said Bishop. “It is no secret that concern for the individual student has always been of paramount importance at Wayland and we will continue to make that a hallmark of the Lubbock Campus. The new building and location will continue to facilitate the growth of the campus and provide us new opportunities of service to the Lubbock community.”
The announcement of Bishop as the new dean comes as the campus is moving its offices and the majority of classrooms to a new facility off North Quaker Avenue and Loop 289, formerly housing the Charter Plains Hospital. While the move has been orchestrated by Brooks and his staff, Bishop realizes the new place will bring added opportunities and challenges as he steps in.
“In the end, it really is about honoring God with our stewardship of the resources with which Wayland has been blessed,” Bishop said. “At Wayland Baptist University’s Lubbock Campus God has blessed us not only with a new facility, but also with a faculty and staff committed to serving God, the university, and her students. I cannot think of a greater opportunity than to join with this group in service.”
Bishop holds a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and a Master of Divinity degree from Golden Gate Theological Seminary. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1995 and also studied at Oxford University.
Wayland officials expressed confidence in Bishop’s appointment to the new role.
“Having served as dean in both Sierra Vista and Amarillo, Dr. Bishop brings significant experience and a proven record of service and success to Wayland’s Lubbock Campus. He will provide strong, experienced leadership as Wayland transitions into a new facility,” said Dr. Bobby Hall, provost. “Dr. Bishop fully understands the university's academic programs and how they relate to the unique needs of West Texas and is committed to enhancing Wayland's contribution to the growth of this region.”
“We had an extraordinarily capable and talented slate of applicants for the Lubbock dean's position, and Wayland is indeed fortunate to have an individual of the caliber of Dr. David Bishop to step into the dean's role in Lubbock as Dr. Brooks assumes his new position as Director of Development,” said Dr. Elane Seebo, associate vice president for external campuses. “Dr. Bishop has an outstanding track record while serving as dean at both the Sierra Vista and Amarillo campuses. His experiences at those campuses have provided him invaluable background for addressing his new challenges at Lubbock.”
The Lubbock campus serves a mixed population of adult students and traditional aged students, with an average enrollment of 750. Like the other 12 external campuses in the Wayland system, Lubbock operates on a quarterly term format, with 11-week terms in fall, winter, spring and summer offered primarily in the evenings and on weekends. The campus offers bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees in a variety of fields and specializes in the degree completion program for adult students.
The campus can be reached at (806) 785-9285 for the next few months.
