Chatman to deliver commencement address at Wayland
PLAINVIEW – Stan Chatman, executive director of student performance for the Palo Duro cluster of the Amarillo Independent School District, will give the address during commencement ceremonies at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview on April 29.
The ceremony is set for 2 p.m. in Harral Auditorium, and approximately 100 students will receive diplomas. Seth Andrews, a graduating senior from Lubbock and a member of the Pioneer Baseball team, will give the student address.
Chatman is a 1977 graduate of Wayland and holds the Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
In his position with A.I.S.D., Chatman is responsible for the 13 schools in the Palo Duro cluster, supervising the operation of the Reading Recovery programs, special education, Title One, bilingual/ESL, instructional technology, migrant services, drug prevention, ACE, athletics and student code of conduct and discipline. He has held that position since 2000.
Prior to that position, Chatman was principal of Palo Duro High School for four years, Alderson Junior High in Lubbock for three years and Parkway Elementary in Lubbock for one year. He was also assistant principal at Estacado High School in Lubbock for two years and was head wrestling coach and assistant varsity football coach at Coronado High School (1983-90) and head track coach and assistant varsity football coach at Dunbar High School (1980-83). He began his educational career as head coach of basketball, football and track for ninth grade at Frenship I.S.D. in Wolfforth.
During the ceremony, Dr. Virginia Harris, professor of education, will be honored with the Emeritus Professor of Education title. Harris taught education at Wayland from 1987 until her retirement in 2005.
