Seminar to feature tips on bridging cultural gaps in ministry

PLAINVIEW – With today’s ever-changing society, finding various cultures within one community is not uncommon. Bridging those gaps can be a challenge, especially for those doing ministry in churches or individually.

In an effort to assist ministers and laypersons in this challenge, Wayland Baptist University will host a one-day seminar called “Crossing Cultures for Ministry,” set for Feb. 26 in the McClung Center, room 211.

“With the mission field not only across the ocean but across your backyard, we hope this seminar will help churches prepare their members to be missionaries wherever they go,” said Micheal Summers, director of church services at Wayland. “This will be  valuable training for churches planning mission trips or mission activities in their neighborhoods.”

Patty Lane, director of the Office of Intercultural Initiatives of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, will lead the seminar. Lane began her ministry with the BGCT in 1984, serving as an interculturalist in the Church Starting Center until assuming her current position in February 2001.

Lane has a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University and the Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. She has worked as a language missionary since 1987 and previously served as a journeyman to Israel. She has also done volunteer missions in several countries, including Singapore, Venezuela, Kenya, Iritrea and Nigeria. She has experience working with more than 47 different languages and culture groups.

Her first book, A Beginners Guide to Crossing Cultures, was released in Spring 2002 through Intervarsity Press. In her BGCT position, her primary responsibilities include encouraging and supporting churches and developing strategies to connect the needs and resources of ethnic churches with the needs and resources of the BGCT.

The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with lunch provided by the university. There is no charge to participate, and additional materials will be available for purchase. The event is sponsored by Wayland’s Office of Church Services.
