Wayland to host area speech teachers

PLAINVIEW -- Wayland Baptist University will host the annual meeting of the West Texas Speech Association on Saturday, August 27 in Plainview.

The event brings speech teachers from throughout western Texas, with a region extending from the Panhandle south to Abilene and San Angelo. According to Virginia Myers, associate professor of speech communications at Wayland and event coordinator this year, the association is comprised primarily of high school speech teachers, college speech professors and some junior high teachers. Around 50 members are expected to attend.

“We are so pleased to have this group on campus and the ties we can build with area teachers,” said Myers, noting this is the first time for Wayland to host the meeting.

Beginning at 9 a.m. in the Nunn Business Building, the event will feature a business meeting and breakout sessions, along with lunch in the McClung University Center. Myers will lead a breakout session on the new certification test in speech for education students. Cindy Riesenburg, speech teacher at Plainview High School, will lead a session on using movies and videos to enhance the required speech communications course in high school. Other sessions will cover engaging students, small group communication and theatre.

Registration for the event will be held that morning from 8-9 a.m. in the Nunn Building. For more information, contact Myers at (806) 291-1085.
