WBU to present opera scenes

PLAINVIEW – The Department of Music at Wayland Baptist University is making final preparations for an evening of scenes from opera, operetta and American musical theatre which will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on April 21-22 in the Miller Recital Hall in Harral Memorial Auditorium.

The program will include operatic scenes from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute and Cosi fan tutte (They Are All Like That) and duets and solos from My Fair Lady, Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Oklahoma and Show Boat. The program will close with the famous “Toast to Love” ensemble from Johann Strauss’ popular operetta Die Fledermaus. The program will be directed by Gerald Dolter, visiting professor of voice and accompanied at the piano by WBU Associate Professor of Music Jennie Lynn Hodges.

Members of the cast participate in a bi-weekly class in opera performance practice at Wayland. They range in age from freshman to senior and are all music majors. The class helps the students make the performance transition from the printed musical page to the performance stage. They learn many of the current techniques employed by today’s stage professionals in opera and on Broadway. Although the current program has been in rehearsal since January, many of the class members participated in an introductory music theatre acting class in the fall semester of 2004.

The class members include sopranos Leslie Delgado, Amy Moss, Ariel Smeaton, Marta Turpin and Lauren Willson; mezzo sopranos Alicia Alford and Labrina Lang; tenor Jeremy Walker and baritones Jamar Jordan and Grayson Smith.

Admission to the performance is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Department of Music at 806-291-1060.
