Students killed in collision
PLAINVIEW – A head-on collision on Highway 70 around Halfway killed two Wayland Baptist University students Wednesday afternoon and injured three others.
Katye Mansdoerfer, a sophomore from Albuquerque, NM, and Reid Rogers, a freshman from Plainview, died at the scene of the accident. The students were on Fall Break and were headed to an unknown location when the accident occurred around 6 p.m. around Halfway, about 12 miles west of Plainview.
One student was airlifted from the scene. Two students were taken by ambulance to Covenant Hospital Plainview; one was later transferred by air to Lubbock.
University officials are providing crisis counseling.
“Words cannot begin to express our emotions at a time like this,” said Dr. Paul Armes, university president. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the students who lost their lives in this tragic accident. Our prayers are, of course, also with the families whose students were injured and with the occupants of the second vehicle involved in the collision. The Wayland family is deeply saddened by these events.”
Katye is the daughter of Rev. Ron and Stephanie Mansdoerfer of Albuquerque. Mansdoerfer is pastor of Northdale Baptist Church in Albuquerque. Reid is the son of Rev. Steve and Debbie Rogers of Plainview, who serves as senior pastor of Trinity Fellowship Church in Plainview.
