Wayland plans college preview event
PLAINVIEW - Cram a concert, athletic events, games, meals, tryouts, late night activities and classes into two days and what do you get? For prospective students of Wayland Baptist University, you get a Big Weekend, slated March 26-27.
The annual college preview event for high school juniors, seniors and college transfers, Big Weekend gives students a chance to get a first-hand look at Wayland's Plainview campus and presents valuable information about the college admissions and financial aid process.
This year's Big Weekend begins on Friday, March 26 with registration at 9 a.m. in the McClung University Center. Events begin that morning with prospects sitting in on actual university classes to get a taste for collegiate academics. Games and activities are planned for the afternoon in the central lawn area, along with campus tours. Other afternoon events include a performance by the music department's student brass ensemble, a faculty clarinet recital, and a cheerleading workshop that is required for anyone wishing to audition for Wayland's squad.
Prospects can then take in a doubleheader game featuring the Wayland Pioneer baseball squad and Oklahoma Baptist University or attend a reception hosted by the Wayland music department faculty and students. After dinner, a concert featuring Casting Crowns and Jeff Deyo will be held in Harral Auditorium, followed by the campus favorite tradition of the late night breakfast, with serving by Wayland faculty and staff. Late night activities will round out the evening.
Saturday's schedule begins with a parent's breakfast and information seminar, an overview about the university and an academic fair where prospects can visit with professors from their field of interest. Another baseball doubleheader is on tap, along with opportunities to visit the admissions and financial aid offices for information or take campus tours. Following the evening meal, a praise service will be hosted by Baptist Student Ministries, rounding out the weekend. The day is also packed with opportunities to tryout for athletic squads including men's golf, men and women's JV basketball, women's volleyball and co-ed cheerleading, along with audition opportunities for vocal music, band, art and theater scholarships.
Prospects will spend the weekend in dormitory rooms along with current students and will need to bring a sleeping bag and toiletries. Parents or sponsors are welcome to attend the event and may take advantage of special Big Weekend hotel rates at the Super 8, Best Western Conestoga, Holiday Inn Express and Comfort Suites.
Fees for the weekend are $20 per person (student or parent/sponsor) and include tickets to the concert, sporting events and all meals. For registration or more information, call 1-800-588-1928 or register online at www.wbu.edu .
