Trustee to present commencement address
PLAINVIEW – Martin L. “Mark” Murdock will deliver the commencement address for Wayland Baptist University graduation ceremonies planned for Saturday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. in Harral Auditorium. Graduating senior Zack Greer of Pampa will present the student address at the event, in which a total of 65 students will receive diplomas.
Murdock is an Albuquerque native who played varsity basketball for Baylor University, serving as team captain his senior year. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Bible and married classmate Linda May Moore in 1963 shortly after graduation.
He served in the U.S. Air Force, entering as an officer in 1966 and serving during the Vietnam War. Afterward, Murdock began a 37-year career in the food brokerage business, serving his last 16 years as president of the West Texas and New Mexico division of Crossmark, Inc. In that capacity, Murdock served two terms as president of the Lubbock Food Brokers Association and on various committees with the National Food Brokers Association. He received national recognition as “Broker of the Year” from major national manufacturers.
After retiring in 1999, he began a second career as vice president of business development and marketing for McDougal Companies in Lubbock, retiring in July 2004. He serves on the development council at Baylor and previously served as chair of that group. He also serves as vice chairman of the community investment division for the Lubbock Area United Way and is team leader for resourcing church starts for the Lubbock Area Baptist Association.
Murdock served for 10 years as a trustee for Wayland Baptist University, including two terms as vice chairman and two as chairman. He began another term in 2004. He is a member of Oakwood Baptist Church in Lubbock, serving as deacon, Sunday School teacher and on several committees.
Murdock and wife Linda have two children, Karen McMillian and Kyle Murdock, and five grandchildren.
Greer will earn a bachelor’s degree in English and religion, with an emphasis in missions studies. A native of Pampa, Zack is the son of James and Dana Greer, presently serving as missionaries to Tanzania. His sister, Penny, is also graduating in the Saturday ceremony. Both plan to pursue missions careers.
Other program personalities include musical ensemble Spirit, and several graduates will be filling roles in prayer, scripture reading and introductions.
