New employees filling void at Wayland Baptist University
PLAINVIEW - Two new directors have come on board recently at Wayland Baptist University, filling a void in the administrative staff. Hope English started August 1 as Director of Special Projects, and Ron Appling began work as the Director of Human Resources on August 1.
English, a longtime Plainview resident, came to Wayland after retiring from Plainview Independent School District. A graduate of Plainview High School and the University of North Texas, English spent her 30-year career as a public school educator, beginning in elementary special education and other classroom experiences before becoming the coordinator of advanced academics for the past 15 years. While in that role, she helped implement the Advanced Placement program and the concurrent enrollment partnership with Wayland.
In her new role at WBU, English will be responsible for several key projects in coordination with the vice presidents for enrollment management and academic services. One area will be investigating the possibility of a student leadership program, exploring those avenues and bringing recommendations to administrators. She will also be helping to develop community education initiatives, working with key Plainview businesses to determine continuing education needs with which the university may be able to assist. Another area will be developing an orientation program for concurrent students at the high school level.
English said she is looking forward to the challenges ahead and said the transition has been a natural one.
"I cannot imagine doing anything else for the past 30 years. Up to this point, my job has been to prepare kids for college, so now I'm looking forward to using that experience on this side," English said. "I look forward to building relationship with students. My passion in life is young people. I've had kids tell me that I've impacted their lives in special ways and it's my prayer that I can continue to do that."
"Hope will be very valuable to Wayland because she's been in the community a long time and knows students well," said Dr. Glenn Saul, vice president for academic and graduate services.
Prior to coming to Wayland, Appling spent more than six years with the Texas Migrant Council in Laredo, working his way up from assistant in the human resources department to Human Resources Director, a position he held for his last three years there. In that role, he created and revised job descriptions, developed a personnel policy and procedures manual and provided training for employees in several areas.
He holds a degree in marketing and business administration from Angelo State University and is a member of Delta Sigma Pi and the Society of Human Resources Management.
At Wayland, Appling will be helping to centralize the human resources functions for the growing and complex university system, including maintaining personnel records and job descriptions, helping with the personnel recruiting process and reviewing policy and procedure on personnel. Appling will also work to ensure that the university is in compliance with all federal and state employment laws.
He is looking forward to bringing HR functions under a central umbrella and improving the university's efficiency in those areas, and he is excited to be part of the Wayland family.
"Wayland as been part of my life since 1986, when I attended Super Summer Camp for three summers," Appling said. "While working for the Texas Migrant Council, I would travel to Plainview and I would always make it a point to stop by Wayland to see the many changes. The opportunity to work for Wayland you could say is a dream come true."
