Wayland plans handbells concert
PLAINVIEW -- Wayland Baptist University's Department of Music will present its annual spring concert featuring the Handbell Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, in the Miller Recital Hall of Harral Memorial Auditorium.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert, "The Life of Christ: Celebrating Through Great Hymns of Faith a Journey Through the Liturgical Year," will open with advent then celebrate Christmas, baptism, transfiguration, Lent, Easter and Christ the King Sunday through the playing of hymns depicting each event.
Several pieces will have additional accompaniment, including soprano Sara Wagoner and Candice Lasiter on clarinet during "Lamb of God" and Jerod Hon on trumpet for "Fanfare for Easter." Three pieces, "Go to Dark Gethsemane," "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross" and "Every Time I Feel the Spirit" will be played by handbell quartets with student conductors. The recital also includes congregational singing.
Robert Black, assistant professor of music at Wayland, will serve as narrator as well as pianist for the event with Dr. Ann Stutes, music department chair, conducting.
Wayland's Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.
