Akins to lead Wayland campus in Oklahoma
PLAINVIEW - Marty Akins has been named the new dean of the Wayland Baptist University campus in Altus, Okla.
Located on Altus Air Force Base, the campus has been in existence for just over a year and began offering classes in November 2001. The campus has already built up an enrollment of 100 students and expects growth to continue.
A native of Ballinger, Akins has a background in ministry, spending 20 years in the pastorate or youth ministry of various churches in Texas. Most recently, Akins has been a financial advisor for UBS Paine Webber in Lubbock.
Prior to that, he was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Snyder for six years, the First Baptist Church in Alvarado for two years and the First Baptist Church in Brock for four years. He also served as pastor of Dunn Memorial Baptist Church in McKinney for three years and at Liberty Baptist Church in Voca for one year. Akins began his ministry service as minister to youth at First Baptist Church in Bronte.
Akins holds an associate of arts degree from Temple College and a bachelor of arts degree from Howard Payne University, where he played basketball. He also has a master of divinity degree and a doctor of philosophy degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Akins brings some teaching experience as well. He has taught Bible classes at two-year colleges and at Southwestern Seminary. He has also taught adjunctly for Wayland's Lubbock campus for three terms and will teach religion courses as an assistant professor at Altus.
He has served as moderator of two different Baptist associations and on many area committees, as trustee of various Baptist entities and on the Baptist General Convention of Texas' Executive Board.
Akins feels the dean's position will allow him to blend several interests.
"I've really enjoyed being around higher education, and I feel some of my greatest gifts are in administration, so the two fit perfectly," he said. "I've tried to be a purpose-driven person as a believer."
Akins is married to Kathleen Rollins. He has three daughters, Danisha, 16, Marleah, 14, and Tilatha, 12. Marty is the son of Ferris and Ramona Akins of Ballinger.
