Office technology program adding skilled members to workforce
Amelia Cline admits she's a bit biased when it comes to the Office Technology Program at Wayland Baptist University's Lifelong Learning Center.
"I think it's a great program," said Cline, LLC director. "We have people all over Plainview in the workforce that have been through our program. People in Plainview know about the program and will often call us for recommendations to fill jobs."
As director of the center, the program is really her "baby" and she takes a personal interest in each of the students, even charting their progress after completion of the program.
Cline has been impressed at the success of the program, noting several recent "graduates" have found great jobs in town. Office technology was previously offered under Wayland's Division of Business, moving to the LLC about five years ago.
Registration is currently underway for the next term of the one-year program, which is limited to 16 participants. Classes begin August 19 for the fall, which features four courses. Three more are featured in the spring and three in the summer, with a certificate of completion presented at the end.
"We cover any kind of computer work that an office would want," Cline said. "We do the Microsoft Office programs - a Windows course, Word and Excel - as well as an accounting segment, legal assistant, and secretarial communications."
Cline added that students also cover essentials of business dress and interviewing for jobs as well as creating a good resume. Outside individuals are brought into the class to do realistic job interviews and give participants that experience.
Each course in the program costs $325 and there are ten total. Cline noted that many students are able to take advantage of scholarship opportunities through the Texas Rehabilitation Commission, Motivation Education and Training, and the Workforce Investment Act.
Registration can be done at the Lifelong Learning Center, located at 708 Yonkers. For more information, contact the center at 291-3650.
