Wayland expands service into Oklahoma with Altus site
Wayland Baptist University is expanding its already growing external presence by offering classes at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma.
The site will be a satellite of the Wichita Falls campus, which is located on Sheppard Air Force Base under the leadership of Dr. Georgia Flanagan, dean. Anne Kinsey, a former employee at Wayland's Hawaii campus, will serve as coordinator and academic adviser at Altus.
Classes will begin in Altus in November, and Wayland has been approved to offer the bachelor's degree. Wayland's offices and classes are located in the Billman Education Center and will serve primarily a military population, though civilians will be phased in as the site grows.
According to Dr. Bill Hardage, vice chancellor for the Wayland University System, the site will remain under the Wichita Falls campus until it gets large enough to be its own campus. Some faculty members from Wichita Falls, which is about 90 miles away, will be teaching courses at Altus. Other adjunct instructors from Oklahoma may be added in the future as well.
Hardage said the Altus venture goes along perfectly with Wayland's goal of carrying its unique brand of higher education with Christian values.
"We're always interested in expanding into any military base that is economically feasible and where we can serve," he said.
"We were asked to submit a proposal by the education officer at Altus, who was aware of work we'd done on other Air Force bases."
Hardage said the university is excited to be able to branch into Oklahoma and also to be working with other schools already offering classes on the base.
