Changes in Wayland pricing, course schedule to help concurrent students
Wayland Baptist University's Plainview campus is changing its prices and course schedule beginning in the fall semester to better accommodate Plainview High School students enrolled concurrently.
The university voted recently to use budgeted monies from the Plainview Educational Partnership program - which currently allows Plainview High graduates who qualify to attend Wayland tuition-free for the first year - to help offset costs for concurrent students.
According to Plainview president Dr. Paul Armes, the university-budget funds will serve as a scholarship of sorts, lowering the current one-third tuition rate for concurrents to a flat $75 per course charge.
"What we hope to do is to introduce more local students to Wayland and then maybe they will go into the full PEP program," Armes said. "The on-campus experience is so valuable. I would think for a high school junior or senior it would be a benefit."
According to Stan DeMerritt, university registrar, the revised schedule adapts more to the high school's block schedule and allows more students to work concurrent classes into their school day. Wayland's morning classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays worked because of their shorter times, which allowed students to commute between the schools and not miss class time.
Hope English, secondary advanced academic services coordinator for the Plainview school district, said the changes could very well mean more students taking advantage of the program to earn college credit while fulfilling high school requirements.
"We do have a lot of kids participating in concurrent enrollment," English said. "We've averaged about 30-35 kids but they're pretty locked to the high school schedules. Band is in the morning, and the block schedule limits what they can do."
The new class time schedule is as follows:
Monday-Wednesday-Friday: 8-8:50 a.m., 9-9:50 a.m., 10-10:50 a.m., 11-11:50 a.m.
Tuesday-Thursday: 7:25-8:40 a.m., 8:50-10:05 a.m., 10:15-11:30 a.m.
Monday-Wednesday & Tuesday-Thursday: 12:20-1:35 p.m., 1:45-3 p.m., 3:10-4:25 p.m., 4:35-5:50 p.m.
